Can it be perceived by Russian speakers as ы or not? Undecided

Not sure about that. I have never perceived it as an "ы". To my ear it was in the beginning a somewhat weird Russian "у"...

Yes. Watching the Appleseed movie (2004) I thought I heard a lot of ы's in fast speech. But I've never been an acute listener.

Yeah, that's my perception too. Maybe it depends on the context...
